The OAIC Kenya got together a group of 10 youth to talk about the future plans of the peace bench creation on the OAIC property in Nairobi. The group was opened with a word of prayer by one of the youth. Reverend Phyllis Byrd opened the discussion for the purpose of us coming together.  As we are moving towards the election, Phyllis added, we want to have a visual symbol of peace. The youth in Nakuru built a peace bench recently as a way to show the community they stand for peace. The OAIC wishes to emulate the peace bench here in Nairobi.

The bench is constructed with recycled plastic bottles, plastic bags and a little cement to hold it together. Not only are is the OAIC creating a visual symbol of peace, but through the recycling of plastic bottles and bags we are also helping our environment. Through the stuffing of plastic bottles with plastic bags we are creating bricks for the basis of the bench. The goal is to have 200 bottles filled with these bags to create our bench. The youth in this project are to be agents of change because the power of the youth is generally overlooked. They are to be the leaders of change for our communities to bring about peace.

Reverend Phyllis then added the overall goal of our project is for these youth to bring benches back to your communities to continue the spread of peace. Our ultimate goal is to have peace benches in every constituency in Kenya. When we meet to construct the bench together, we want to discuss peace and what keeps peace in Kenya from happening. We are building the first model here in order to spread it out further in the future.

These are the youth that will lead our Peach Bench Campaign

The youth were asked to collect the plastics for this project and the group that collects the most bags will be rewarded with 5,000 shillings to be split between the partners. We are asking these youth to reach out to their communities to get help to collect the bags. This is giving us a way to help clean up our environment, so ultimately we are doing two things at once. The youth is set to return to begin construction on 5th December as we officially embark on our peace campaign.
