The General Secretary’s office carries the responsibility of giving leadership to the programmes at the secretariat and ensuring their effective co-ordination and implementation. He ensures the effectiveness of the OAIC’s structures of governance and accountability. In addition, the General Secretary maintains relations with partner agencies and churches, ecumenical and public bodies. In the year 2006 the General Secretary has special responsibility for guiding the re-visioning process of the organization in consultancy with CORAT Africa .

The Re-envisioning Process

The OAIC Secretariat has been involved in a transformation process for a number of years. This process is motivated by the desire of the Secretariat team to build an organisation which responds appropriately to the needs of the member churches and which engages effectively with the challenges of rapidly changing local and global environments. The OAIC has been handling this transformation in an incremental manner. Staff have been continually evaluating the various programme activities in a search for relevant methodologies and approaches which can help to build the capacity and resourcefulness of the AICs. During the process we have also identified among the member churches and the programmes constraints that we have sought to respond to. (For further information go to the 2005 DT Concept Paper (Doc. 3).  and the Development and HIV/AIDS Concept Paper for 2006 (Doc. 11).

The OAIC is working to translate the lessons learnt during this process into a long-term strategy.  CORAT Africa has been hired to facilitate the development of a five-year strategy that will reflect the direction the OAIC is taking, and articulate the organizational structure required to implement the strategy.
